Dr. Ava Kwong is the Chief of Breast Surgery Division , Clinical Associate Professor  at 
the  University of Hong Kong Medical Centre,    Director of the  Tun g Wah Hospital Breast 
Centre  and Director of Breast Center of University of Hong Kong-  Shenzhen Hospital. 
She is also the Assi stant Dean (Faculty Advancement  and Knowledge Exchange ) of 
Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong.  She  also h olds the po sition of 
Visiting Associate Professor , Division of Oncology,   at  the  Stanford University , USA .  She 
has been appointed to be the co-leader of Cancer Work Group in the development of 
Cancer Services planning of Hong Kong West Cluster, Hospital Authority in 2012.  In 
2013 she was nominated to be the Deputy Chief and Committee Member of the Shenzhen 
Breast and Endocrine Cancer Society, The People’s Republic of China .  She has also been 
appointed to be a member of the Cancer Coordinating Committee of the Food and Health 
Bureau, Government Secretariat, The Government of the Hong Kong Special 
Administrative Region, The People’s Republic of China  in August 2014.   During her 
surgical career, she has gained multiple awards including  the  Hong Kong International 
Cancer Congress “Young Investigator Award” in 2006   and 2008   on her research work on 
breast cancer genetics in Chinese and Asian population,  the Breast Surgery International 
Best Paper Prize, at the International Society of Surgery International Surgical Week 
meeting    in 2007,   and a scholarship for  undertaking   a  research fellowship in Breast 
Cancer Genetics at  the  Stanford University School of Medicine in 2005. Her studies on 
different aspects of Breast cancer in Chinese women have gained many publications in 
reputab le international journals. She has received various grants to support her research 
including Hong Kong government based grants such as  Food and Health Bureau HHSRF, 
The Innovation and Technology Fund, Research Grant Council (RGC)/General Research 
Fund (GRF ),   and international grants including National Institute of Health in United 
States of America. 
In 2007,  s he founded  t he Hong Kong Hereditary Breast Cancer Family Registry , where 
she currently serves as  the  Chairman.     The Regi stry is a charitable  organization which 
raises funds to support the underprivileged to receive genetic testing, performs data 
collection, conduct s  research, and  organizes events  to raise awareness of the  disease. 
S ince 2007, she has been the Director of t he Hong Kong Hereditary and High Risk Breast 
and Ovarian Cancer Programme, a collaborative programme of  the  Stanford University 
School of Medicine,  Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital  with contributions from 
Hospital   Authority   and University based hospitals.    Other main areas of her res earch 
include   studies   of novel biomarkers,   psychosocial studies  and genetic predisposition    in 
breast  cancer ..  She is also involved in various international oncological clinical trials. 
She is  contributing author in various medical books including   “ABC o f Breast Disease ”  
published by British Medical Journal,  Companion to Specialist Surgical Practice: Breast 
Surgery Volume: 5th Edition,  “Up to Date” on-line medical website based in United 
States,  and also patient information books published in Hong K ong an d writes a monthly 
medical column in Jessica Magazine to promote health awareness.  She also has much 
interest in training of nurses and  is the  Director of  Breast Cancer Nursing Workshop   and 
Course which has been held annually since 2008. 
In 2009, she foun ded the Women’s Surgical Chapter at the College of Surgeons of Hong 
Kong  and was elected to be the first Chairlady.   In 2009 she was elected Chair of the 
International Committee of th e  Association of Women Surgeons  where she served on the 
council until 2012.  In 2011 she was nominated to become a council member of the 
College of Surgeons of Hong Kong, being the first woman to attain such a position  and 
she is the first women who has attained Associate Professor position in Surgery in Hong 
Aside from her academic and clinical  work she is also very supportive of patients support 
groups and awareness programmes. In 2008, she was nominated  a  consultant for   the 
Global Chinese Breast Cancer Groups Alliance and The Dragon Abreast patient 
advocacy group. She is the medical consultant of various charity organizations including 
Hong Kong Cancer Fund, the   Kerry  Kuok Foundation,  and  Joshua Hellman n  Foundation 
for rare paediatric genetic disease.  She has  been appointed the  World Pink Ambassador 
by the Estee Lauder (Hong  Kong) Companies’ Breast Cancer Research Foundation since 
2008 to promote breast cancer awareness. 
Her contributions in the academic, community and charity work has won herself the 
Jessica Magazine’s “Ten  Most Successful Women Award” in 2009 and Marie   Claire 
M agazine’s “ Fashion with Heart” award in 2010.
